Are you like me, someone who wants to see it all without breaking the bank? Then this guide is for you! What could be better than exploring two destinations in one trip—getting a taste of two countries, trying different cuisines, and soaking in diverse cultures—all while saving money?

Here are some examples of countries with cities so close to each other that you can reach them in under 2 hours, whether by train, bus, car, or ferry.
One big advantage of this approach is that round-trip flights to a single destination are often more expensive, or flights to one city might cost more than to a nearby city. Traveling to a second destination can help you save on airfare while packing more adventure into your trip.
🇱🇺 Luxembourg & Paris 🇫🇷
Luxembourg is often overlooked when traveling in Europe, and that’s understandable—it’s a tiny country tucked between France, Germany, and Belgium. But this “small” nation has plenty to offer. Did you know that public transport in Luxembourg is completely free—even for tourists?

Can you imagine reaching Paris from Luxembourg in just 2 hours by train? In the time of a short nap, you could wake up in the City of Light. Paris hardly needs an introduction, with its world-famous landmarks, gourmet cuisine, and endless cultural experiences.
Local Insight: While in Luxembourg, don’t miss the Grund district, a charming area along the Alzette River with cobblestone streets and hidden cafes—perfect for a quiet stroll before heading to Paris.
Best Time to Go: Summer (July and August) is perfect for both Luxembourg and Paris, when festivals, outdoor events, and street life are at their peak.
If Paris isn’t your thing, or you’ve already been, Brussels is another excellent option from Luxembourg. The train takes about 3 hours, and flights to Brussels are often cheaper than Luxembourg, making it a smart alternative.

🇩🇪 Munich & Innsbruck – Salzburg 🇦🇹
Start your trip in Munich, a city that perfectly mixes tradition and modern life. You’ll find historic beer halls, elegant architecture, huge green parks like the English Garden, and a strong Bavarian identity that makes the city feel both grand and welcoming.
If you have extra days or want to add another country, Austria is incredibly close. In just about 2 hours by train, bus, or car, you can reach Innsbruck or Salzburg.
Innsbruck is famous as part of the Tyrol region, known for skiing in the winter—but it’s also a haven for nature lovers in summer, with hiking, mountain lakes, and panoramic views. Salzburg, rich in history, is the birthplace of Mozart and home to stunning baroque architecture. Nearby is Hallstatt, often called “Europe’s prettiest village,” just an hour’s drive away.
Local Insight: From Munich, you can also take a quick trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, the real-life fairytale castle that inspired Disney.
Best Time to Go: Visit in winter for magical Christmas markets and snowy postcard views, or in spring and summer to fully enjoy the lakes, mountains, and hiking trails.

🇧🇪 Brussels & Amsterdam 🇳🇱
Traveling from Brussels to Amsterdam by train takes around 2 hours. Both cities are cosmopolitan hubs with vibrant cultural scenes, incredible architecture, and plenty to see and do.
Brussels blends grand architecture with a quirky side — think royal squares one minute and comic strip murals the next. Amsterdam charms with its canals, narrow houses, creative energy, and relaxed atmosphere.
Local Insight: In Brussels, explore the comic strip murals around the city—they’re a hidden gem that most tourists miss. In Amsterdam, rent a bike and explore the canal belt like a local for an unforgettable experience.
Best Time to Go: Visit Amsterdam during tulip season or on King’s Day for a unique cultural experience. Brussels shines in spring, when the parks and café terraces come to life.

🇬🇷 Corfu & Albania 🇦🇱
Dreaming of a European island escape without the crazy price tag? Corfu delivers turquoise waters, Venetian architecture, and beautiful beaches at a more affordable cost than many other Greek islands. The old town, with its pastel buildings and narrow alleys, is perfect for wandering at sunset.
From Corfu, ferries run to Sarandë, Albania, in just 30 minutes. We booked directly with Ioanian Seaways, and it was super affordable—you can even bring your luggage on board.
Albania is extremely budget-friendly compared to other European countries. A good hotel with a pool and sea view can cost around €70–80 per night, and food and taxis are very inexpensive. Nearby Sarandë is Ksamil, part of Albania’s stunning Riviera.

Local Insight: In Ksamil, take a short boat ride to the tiny uninhabited islands nearby—perfect for a private beach escape away from the crowds.
Best Time to Go: June and September offer amazing weather without the heavy crowds of July and August.

🇸🇰 Bratislava & Vienna 🇦🇹

Just 1 hour separates these two capitals, making them perfect for a joint visit. Bratislava charms with its compact medieval old town and riverside cafes, while Vienna impresses with imperial palaces, art galleries, and coffeehouse culture.
Local Insight: In Bratislava, walk up to Bratislava Castle at golden hour for panoramic views over the Danube. In Vienna, wander beyond the main streets into the Neubau district for independent boutiques, cool cafés, and a more local, modern vibe.
Best Time to Go: Visit during Christmas for festive markets or in summer for long daylight and outdoor events.
